“Roseanne” double standard for liberals at play for Samantha Bee

Two days ago, I feared a potential double standard would naturally come about after Roseanne Barr’s firing for her racist and offensive tweet. As I was writing that piece, I had people like ESPN’s Keith Olbermann and his history of tweeting in mind.

But I didn’t think a ripe example from someone new would come so soon. I’m talking about TBS’s “Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee who slammed President Donald’s Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump on Wednesday, calling her a “feckless c—” during her show’s monologue.

It took a full day for Bee to apologize, saying, “I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”

TBS also released a statement: “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night. Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

Interesting. I don’t recall these statements coming from ABC after Barr’s series of tweets. It took just a few hours for ABC to respond to them, immediately axing Barr’s entire show.

Indeed, many correctly draw distinctions between Bee’s vulgar language and Barr’s racist slander. But that doesn’t excuse the widely different responses from TBS and ABC, and especially not the untimeliness of TBS’s response.

While some make the case that these two actions are separate and should not be compared to each other, I say each act should be compared to the actions any decent person would take. And both of these actions are independently inexcusable and unacceptable.

But what is clear is it’s more acceptable to have a zero-tolerance policy on one side only.
