Democratic Socialism is the future, DNC chair says
The nation is still in shock after 28-year-old, self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist Alexandria Octavio-Cortez defeated incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley in the Democratic congressional primary in New York’s 14th District. Crowley, who was the No. four ranked Democrat in the House, was seen as a potential House Speaker in the coming years.
While this was a major blow to the Democratic Party in some circles, it must not have been for Democratic National Committee Chair Thomas Perez, who praised Octavio-Cortez as the “future of our party.”
“I have three kids. Two of them are daughters — one just graduated college, one who is in college. And they were both texting me about their excitement over Alexandria because she really — she represents the future of our party,” Perez said on “The Bill Press Show.”
Democratic Socialism as the future of the party?
Just what does that mean?
First of all, it is important to understand that Democratic Socialism is not a branch of the Democratic Party. Rather, it has a separate chair and organization, one that endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in 2016 and refused to endorse mainstream Democrat Hillary Clinton.
And the Democratic Socialism policy?
Octavio-Cortez ran on a platform of Medicare for all, tuition-free college and most radically, the abolishment of ICE. According to the Twitter account of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, their platform includes abolishing profit, prisons, cash bail, borders and ICE.
Indeed, based on this tweet, it looks like this not only is the future of the Democratic Party, but the very reality of it.
