Chicago residents call for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation

The situation in Chicago was dire, and somehow it has gotten even worse. This past weekend alone saw at least 60 people shot, 12 of whom died, in one of the deadliest weekends in the city’s history. The victims include 14 juveniles who were shot, and two 17-year-olds who were killed.

Chicago had over 300 murders in the month of July alone, which is more than any other city in the United States, even though murders decreased 23 percent from the same point last year.

Residents who can no longer tolerate living amid such brutal violence have called for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation. Emanuel, who was President Barack Obama’s chief of staff for a year and a half, has served as Chicago’s mayor since 2011, and he is up for re-election in February.

Last Thursday, Aug. 2, before the weekend shootings, protestors shut down Chicago’s famous Lake Shore Drive, demanding an end to Chicago’s gun violence and calling for Mayor Emanuel’s resignation.

If Emanuel has any respect for his city and his constituents, he should listen to them. It’s time to give somebody else a chance to repair Chicago. Clearly his policies and focus on downtown attractions, giving illegal immigrants city ID cards and requiring high school students to provide evidence of a post-graduation plan in order to graduate is not helping.

As in any elected position, Emanuel is there to represent the people who put him in power. There does not seem to be an end to the vicious slaying on the streets of Chicago. And if Emanuel stays in office, it doesn’t look like this will change any time soon.

Should the mayor choose to remain in office and run for re-election as he has said he would, perhaps the people of Chicago will condemn him with their votes.

To all Chicago’ans who voted Rahm Emanuel into your mayors office. “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING….?” Now your having a change of thought. Just now your doing this after several hundred or thousands of people are killed by this man’s stupidity. I feel you (the voters) should place all of Chicago’s woes at your own feet, and stop crying and complaining about your plight now. Let’s just see if someone there will rise to the top and bring leadership to your community and rally all the people there to force change. Many times radicalness should be fought by being radical. You cannot fight a rattle snake by putting lipstick on the thing. So….lets see……the rest of the country will sit back and see if you can produce anything….!
